The SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 disease continue to keep the world on tenterhooks. In the highly respected scientific journal "THE LANCET - Respiratory Medicine" an article has been published with the collaboration of the board member of the CRC 1278 “PolyTarget” Prof. Dr. Michael Bauer (Center for Sepsis Control and Care CSCC at the University Hospital Jena), in which still open questions about the underlying mechanisms of the disease are discussed.

The scientists investigated the origin and development of the complex disease both at the level of the cells and at the non-cellular level. They found that despite the similarities to other diseases of the respiratory tract, a new disease entity may be present. In particular, new data point to involvement of the so-called endothelium - this is a thin layer of cells that lines the inside of blood vessels. In order to provide optimal care for patients with COVID-19, further research is needed to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms and the entire spectrum of the clinical picture - ideally as a combination of basic and clinical studies.
